WPL 2025: Depleted RCB flex batting muscle, with helping hand(s) from Gujarat Giants

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have faced several setbacks ahead of the third season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), but they proved their resilience in the opening match. Despite losing key players like Sophie Devine, Sophie Molineux, and Asha Sobhana, RCB’s batting strength remained intact, and they emerged victorious against Gujarat Giants (GG) in a thrilling chase.

In the match, RCB successfully chased down a record 202, with nine balls to spare, despite struggling initially. Gujarat Giants, led by Ash Gardner, posted a competitive total, but RCB's batting line-up, led by Ellyse Perry, capitalized on the Giants' fielding mistakes. Perry, who was unable to bowl due to a hip injury, played a crucial role with the bat, scoring a match-winning 57 off 34 balls. However, it was the unbroken partnership between Richa Ghosh and Kanika Ahuja that turned the game in RCB's favor. Ghosh's explosive 64 off 27 balls at a strike rate of 237.03 was a key highlight of the chase.

RCB’s chase was assisted by several dropped catches and misfields from GG, which allowed the defending champions to recover from early setbacks. Despite the mistakes from the Giants, RCB’s players capitalized on every opportunity. However, coach Mandhana acknowledged that the team’s bowling would be tested in future matches, especially given the absence of some of their top wicket-takers from last season.

RCB’s victory was a testament to their batting depth and determination, but their bowling department will need to step up as the tournament progresses. With key players sidelined, the team’s ability to adapt and fight through challenges will be crucial as they aim to defend their title in the 2024 WPL.
